Social Networking And IGC

The International Geological Congress (IGC) is the biggest and most important geological event in the world. The IGC attracts hundred and thousands of delegates from all over the world.

Technology is expanding everyday and businesses/companies like the IGC need to take onboard that technology and use it to help them reap the benefits and rewards. Through the use of Social Networks, IGC will be able to create a modernised type of communication between not only delegates but also staff and other people whom are interested in the event. By embracing Social Networks, IGC can create a Social Media strategy to implement it with their marketing plans.

The main steps in which IGC need to consider before implementing such Social Networks are as follows:

1. Planning
IGC must determine what their goals and objectives are. This step is important as it is the stepping stone to implementing successful Social Networks within their organisation.

2. Social Network Tools
IGC must research the different types of Social Networking tools that they would like to use. Preferably Social Networks which will attract many viewers and target the audiences. Each Social Network is used by different people. Some like complex Social Networks (example Facebook) others like it simple (for example Twitter). By referring to the list of goals and objectives IGC would be able to derive to a conclusion as to which tools work best for their business/organisation.

3. Social Networking Objectives
Need to know their target audience: Who will you attract?, which social network is best?, which is used more?, these are the questions to ask… Taking this into account, IGC would benefit from Facebook more as it is used by millions of people and is the most active social Network ever created. This social Network has a better chance of reaching the target audiences.

Building reputation and maintaining relationships: The most important factor within a business is to maintain good customer satisfaction. This in turn increases IGC’s brand name. Reports have proven that customer satisfaction is what brings them back. This has been proven to be true. Clients and consumers comeback for the quality of service provided by the company. Maintenance of Social Networks: It is important to keep regular posts about the company and event. This is to show consumers and clients that you are keeping everyone updated. This is to boost your reputation within Social Networks. Regular news feeds, videos, photos and comments will draw in your consumers and clients.

These are essential points which are needed to be taken accounted for. By implementing Social Networks like Facebook and Twitter in your Social Media strategy you will achieve your goals sooner than you expected.  Social Networks is increasing rapidly, so jump on the band wagon if you haven’t done so and take advantage of it.

More and more businesses/organisations/companies and individuals are using them more and more each day. It is the perfect Stepping stone to successfully promoting your company

The Use Of Wiki Within The Enterprise

As we all know business reputation and brand name is a really important key factor within any business. It is the face of the business, the greater the reputation, the more advantage they have with clients and customers. Today big and small businesses and companies thrive on competitive advantage to strengthen and increase their brand name and reputation within the business communities.

To accomplish the effective needs, big and small companies are slowly adopting web 2.0 technologies to help gain ground against its competitors. The use of web 2.0 technologies helps improve productivity and collaboration and is also used to promote and innovate. Wiki falls under the web 2.0 category and is highly used as a solution to collaborate online with ease. The use of wiki is slowly growing in the enterprise, it is a tool which all enterprises should use if they wish to improve the collaboration of employees and clients/customers.

If  the International Geological Conference (IGC) were to implement such a web 2.0 technology (wiki) the knowledge and understanding of management is required to maximise and increase the participation of employees within the group while keeping all business objectives in scope

Upon looking further into the wiki, Prime 5 were able to come up with strategical strategies that should be followed to ensure the successful implementation of the wiki within the enterprise.

Below is a list of strategies which where identified by Prime 5:

  1. ICG must implement the wiki into the organisation’s IT collaboration architecture.
  2. Assign a leader to each wiki and have that champion observe contributions that people make to the wiki
  3. An understanding of the wiki  “rules of conduct” must monitor and enforce
  4. Understand that the most difficult barrier to cross in sustaining a wiki is convincing people to edit others’ work
  5. Promote the activity of asking wiki participants to keep watching for repetitive activity to evolve and enhance wiki technology

Corporate Culture and Collaboration Strategy

Corporate culture and collaboration within a company can be improved and enhanced to create a successful methodology to implement social media strategies. Many companies have implemented this strategy with great success.

People usually find a company hard to understand they ask questions like: who are they? what do they do? who do they do it for? etc. These questions are commonly asked when reading about a company or when a company is rebranding. These questions can be answered by implementing this strategy. By implementing this strategy, it would reflect on the corporate culture to aid others in understanding the company. This provides an easy way to reach out to people and to tell them what the company is all about

The International Geological Congress (IGC), have already implemented have already implemented some strategies. In my opinion the IGC can benefit greatly from this strategy of implementing/improving/enhancing corporate culture and collaboration. My opinion is based on the fact that the IGC is held once every four years and attracts over  6000 delegates from over 100 countries all around the world. This strategy if implemented would provide an insight as to what is happening during the event and what happens on stage and off stage.

The main area in which this strategy will focus on os corporate culture, by using simple web 2.0 based tools such as blogging. The posts should consist of information in which people would find interesting. Below is a list of some information which should be used in the proposed blog, the information would grab the attention of others:

  • Upcoming Events
  • News Updates
  • Live Stream Footage/Audio
  • Input from delegates and professionals
  • Input from attendees
When I am interested in a particular item or event, I would keep track of the event itself by reading about the lead up to it. I also like to read the live updates and view the live streams either audio or video. This will provide me with viewers comments and opinions which is always a great thing to read. For example, one of my favourite events the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) which is held each year. There are some websites that are dedicated to technology and provide up to date information, live audio streaming etc.

In my opinion IGC should create and share to the globe their company of an enjoyable, communal and dynamic society. This will provide IGC with a fun way of interacting with one another and with others. This will keep them fresh and fun which will help them in the long run.

In regards to blogging, there should be a few things which IGC should include on their blogging page. Tools from Facebook can be used, these tools are “status updates” and “check in”. This will expand their company and reach out to people who do not follow the company via blogs but follow them via reading. Another tool which would be useful is the “subscribe” tool, this allows followers to subscribe to one post and be notified if another post is posted or if comments are made on the subscribed post.

Issues with Adoption – Week 7

Businesses are slowly edging towards adopting social tools, most businesses have already started to adopt social tools to take an advantage in the workplace and in sales . Social tools, can usher in significant large-scale shifts in where productive forces and innovation come from. Organisations will all adopt enterprise social tools in slightly different ways and will generally proceed from ad hoc usage, often by applying widely available consumer tools at first, to more evolved open business models.

Although adopting social tools comes with its benefits, there are a few issues in which businesses need to overcome in order to successfully adopt social media tools. A few issues are listed below:

  • Lack of social media literacy amongst workers – Those who haven’t been maintaining blogs, updating wiki sites, using social networks, sharing information socially, etc. will not understand how to use them and will require more education than those who do
  • A perception that social tools won’t work well in a particular industry – There is often an assumption in many specialized industries  for example medicine that social tools won’t be a good fit for their specific
  • Social software is still perceived as too risky to use for core business activities – There’s a sense that social tools is not for operations or key business capabilities. This can be ascribed variously to concerns about unpredictability, loss of control, or worries of introducing potential distractions to activities that directly and immediately affect the conditions of the business, including the bottom line.
  • Can’t get enough senior executives engaged with social tools – Most senior executives in large organizations are often read-only users of their IT systems, whether it’s Outlook, their Blackberry, or operational dashboards.
  • The needs around community management have come as a surprise – Social tools create participant audiences with a shared understanding and sense of community, as well as an internally guided direction. Without suitable management (help, support, guidance, moderation, administration, and planning) communities will (and should) eventually take on a life of theirVerizon Business own, but perhaps without your involvement.

This list is only a few of the many issues which revolve around businesses and organisations. In order to successfully adopt the use of social media tools, these barriers need to be overcome. There are many businesses and organisations that have successfully implemented social media adoption, an example is VerizonBusiness. Verizon Business has “taken the Mystery Out of Adopting Unified Communications and Collaboration Technology”. They have created a consulting service (listen to podcast) which provides expert consultants who will learn all about a company’s business objectives, assess its current technology, conduct user profiles to uncover opportunities for business-process improvement, and overcome cultural hurdles — such as employee reluctance to use new communications tools.

Legal Risks of Social Media Sony (Playstation) – Week 5

Lately the gaming industry has taken a “BOOM” to social media. With the increase of population around the world, more consoles and games are being developed and sold rapidly. As these increase, companies are looking at ways to improve the gaming experience to further increase their revenue. To do this these companies have implemented web 2.0 technologies within their gaming consoles.

Most of you may own a Playstation 3, I own one myself and love it! Well by now you should know that Sony’s Playstation 3 is amongstthe top selling gaming consoles of all time do I also need to mention the new Playstation Vita? The console has loads of processing and graphics power along with tonnes of games for all ages. Sony has implemented many social media techniques to drive their sales through the roof. Below area list of techniques which they have implemented over time.

  • Game Trophies (through Facebook)
  • Live Chat (In-Game)
  • Playstation Network (PSN)
What is PSN you may ask? for you people who do not know, PSN is a network which is used to access online content, access the playstation store and amongst other things.
Sony had to develop and implement the Playstation Network in order to accomplish their goals of driving sales through the roof. Potential buyers of the console who wish to play games with live chat, share their gaming trophies, access the online Playstation Store would have to sign up to the Playstation Network. This means that personal data had to be entered in, data such as name, address, date of birth, email, phone number and credit card details. Once this stage was accomplished, the user can then take advantage of the social media for gaming.

This may sound AWESOME and UNREAL the thought of playing first person shooters (multiplayer) and to chat to one another during game play is unthinkable, you got to love it!! Okay so there are major legal risks involved with the implementation of the PSN. Risks such as security, loss of data, data confidentiality and privacy breaches.

These risks are relevant because private information of customers would be stored on their account within a database, these databases hold all of the accounts, over 20 million PSN accounts have been registered, meaning that there are 20 million users, 20 million credit cards. What if Sony’s security was breached? all or most of the accounts would have been accessed and personal information would have been obtained. Credit card details would have been taken and possibly used, we all know credit card fraud is a major issue, but with personal information as well then identity fraud would be possible as well. What would happen after this? Sony’s reputation and brand name would be decreased and damages plus, they would have to plan and implement a new type of security which would cost millions and also be slapped with millions of lawsuits. This in return would cost them Billions of dollars.

Do I need to mention that there is no PERFECT security? where ever there is a type of security in place, people will try as long as it takes to “break” and “crack” it. When this happens personal data is obtained and used and the company is in one long ride to resolve the issue. That is why security must be kept up to date and changes must be made.

Sony’s PSN security was breached earlier this year, with Millions of accounts accessed. Amongst those millions, 700,000 accounts from Australia were breached. Personal data and credit cards where accessed. Sony notified the world about this breach and had to shut down the network to re-develop and re-implement their security to protect customers of future privacy breaches. This in terms did cost them millions and they had to implement the following according to www.psu.com.

  • Enhanced levels of data protection and encryption
  • Enhanced ability to detect software intrusions
  • Unauthorised access and unusual activity patterns
  • Implement additional firewalls
  • Establishment of a new data center in an undisclosed location with increased security

Benefits and Risks Enterprise 2.0 – Week 4

Enterprise 2.0 is rapidly growing and having a major impact on businesses. Success stories are emerging regularly and rapidly, one comes to think about the risks involved upon the implementation of Enterprise 2.0. Yes we have gained the benefits but the risks are always there and we will have to learn and come up with ways to maximise the benefits and minimize the risks where possible.

Enterprise 2.0 introduces the dangers and challenges to the integrity of data, which is the key importance to any business. The information of businesses is the utter most important resource therefore it is best to try to prevent this beforehand, rather than dealing with that challenge later on down the track once the damage has been done.

Ok so the benefits can be broken into four sections: Productivity, Knowledge, Staff Engagement and Reputation. So what does this mean? This means that businesses who adopt Enterprise 2.0 would gain these four benefits. Productivity and efficiency will increase due to collaboration between colleagues, this can be done through enterprise 2.0 tools such as Wikis and live chats. Knowledge can be used and shared by people, documents and resources. Staff Engagement enhances internal communication and enhances collaborative behaviours, this leads to a new working concept and can increase shared learning opportunities. Reputation is a major benefit as it is used to build client and customer relations and to also makes a “statement” to its competitors.

We also know the risks involved in implementing Enterprise 2.0, these risks will damage the companies/businesses dramatically. If implemented wrong, the companies/businesses can see decrease in productivity, reliability, reputation and resources. The main risk in my opinion is security, if the implementation of Enterprise 2.0 was somehow “broken into” or should i say
“hacked”; private and personal information could be leaked.  This could mean that the company information, meetings etc could be taken and thus used to damage the company/businesses.

We have seen this recently, an example is the Rupert Murdoch cases that has been growing the past couple of months. News International has been damaged by mobile phone hacking accusations, hackers managed to get past the security and have obtained audio recordings of the phone hacking and also emails of “paying police officials”.  This shows that the security has been “broken into”, reputation is now down and that they are no longer reliable. This comes to show the risks involved in Enterprise 2.0 and what they can do to a “once” big company.

We have heard some success stories from businesses, I would like to share a business with you whom have had success in implementing Enterprise 2.0. Novell implements Wikis in a variety of ways, they are used within teams and across the enterprise. Novell also uses live chat and cloud services to connect and share ideas with the general public.Novell has overcome the risk by coupling their Wikis with their security behind the firewall, this has led them to using wikis in the many development phases that involve collaboration such as requirements generation, documentation, and bug fixes.

In a world where Web 2.0 and Enterprise 2.0 is used regularly everyday by businesses, there is no limit to what companies can achieve. I have shown you a company (Novell) which has successfully implement Enterprise 2.0. I have also shown you a “once” big company falling to their knees, thus damaging their reputation and successfully ticking all the boxes in the key risks.

Wikinomics Business Model – Week 3

Hi guys,

This week is about wikinomics business models, as you can see that I am up very late trying to finish this blog. It took me ages to find companies or enterprises that use some of the business models (i.e peer, being open, sharing and acting global).

Wikinomics is all about collaboration within the companies and enterprise 2.0, today I will be focusing on Companies whom are well into technology; whom also supply the technology to be used for web 2.0 purposes as well and by enterprises.

The first company in which I think may use this is Samsung. Apple has been collaborating with Samsung on LCD screens, in which Samsung has developed and are being tested. Apple seems very interested in Samsungs quad extended graphics (QXGA), this is a displaywith a high resolution of 2048 × 1536 pixels which will provide full high definition (HD) viewing experiences to users. So in my opinion Samsung is using “peer” by collaborating with Apple (a rival) and also “shares” Samsung’s intellectual property to foster relationships, contributing holistically to industry growth (tablets). Not just that but LG has also been involved in this, so there are three companies collaborating and sharing hardware to create in my opinion; relationships (although Apple is suing Samsung over patent matters). I could not seem to find anything on Acting Global, All I know is that Samsung has done very well with their devices, especially in the “screens department. Most rivals want the hardware and technology. Would this count as acting global? You guys tell me what you think.

Because Web 2.0 is growing, it means that it is getting bigger and bigger everyday. Everything nowadays is all about visual for example; interviews through Skype (social media), Youtube videos etc. The screen resolution will have to improve visibility for web browsing, viewing pictures/photos, watching videos and face to face conversation/conferences online. Documents can be clear if the person is holding them up to the camera and thus the receiving person can view it. This will surely boost web 2.0. It is definately getting bigger and better everyday.

The second company is you guessed it, Apple. Apple has collaborated with Nike in the past to deliver a sports sensor in which iPhone’s and iPod’s can connect to cardio equipment. You may already know this but in the past Apple and Nike collaborated and came up with a sensor for some of their shoes in which it tracks the distances of runs and other information. Apple wishes to take it further so that it could focus building relationships within the gyms and the people who use them. Nikes apps which are released on itunes are  Nike Training Club and Boom. In my opinion Apple has used “peer” with Nike, being open to gym, fitness and personal uses. And “acting global” as Apple is the leader in smart devices and they collaborated with Nike to help global citizens keep fit. And also “sharing” for Apple to share this app with the gym, it would create a huge growth not only in their smart devices but also in Nikes sporting wears and gym memberships. This app can record data to give you your result, this benefits you because you do not have to manually record data as it is all stored. the best thing about this is that you can send the data to your personal trainer through Facebook and email. By using web 2.0 it benefits all gym junkies as they can share their statistics online through social media.
